Why Mexico star Raul Jimenez wears a protective headband?

Mexico striker Raul Jimenez drew attention during his side’s 2-0 victory over South Africa in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, not only for his goal but also for the distinctive protective headband he continues to wear on the pitch.

The experienced forward played a key role in Mexico’s winning start to the tournament, yet many fans were left wondering about the purpose of the headgear that has become a permanent part of his appearance over the past five years.

The answer lies in one of the most frightening incidents in recent football history.

In November 2020, while representing Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League clash against Arsenal, Jimenez suffered a devastating head injury following a collision with Arsenal defender David Luiz.

The impact left the Mexican international unconscious on the field and required immediate medical attention. He was rushed to hospital in London, where doctors diagnosed a fractured skull in an incident that threatened not only his football career but also his life.

The severity of the injury forced Jimenez into a lengthy rehabilitation process. After months of treatment and recovery, the striker eventually returned to competitive action in August 2021, completing a remarkable comeback from a potentially career-ending setback.

Since his return, Jimenez has worn a specially designed protective headband during matches as a precautionary measure.

The custom-made device is medically approved and has been tailored specifically for the former Wolves striker. It features breathable elastic material combined with strategically placed padding and protective composite layers designed to reduce the force of impacts.

The headgear serves two important functions. It helps absorb and distribute the energy generated during collisions or headers, while also providing protection and stability around the area affected by surgery.

Despite its protective features, the design allows Jimenez to compete without compromising comfort, mobility or performance.
