CARDIFF: India’s talismanic batter Rohit Sharma could be seen in the Indian jersey for the last time during the final and third ODI at Lord’s against England.
According to reports in the Indian media, the 39-year-old’s recent failures in the ODIs have sparked debate over his place in the team.
The right-hander has so far managed to score 11 and 26 in the first and second ODIs against the Three Lions.
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee has informed Sharma that it has decided to move on from him after the series.
The reports further say that the Indian selection committee spoke to Sharma, alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, last week and outlined a plan ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The selectors are keen to give younger players more opportunities. With left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal waiting in the wings, they are planning for the 2027 50-over World Cup without Sharma.
One of the reports quoted a source within the BCCI, citing Rohit Sharma’s fitness and the selectors’ long-term plans.

“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” the source said.
It was also reported that Rohit Sharma spoke to a few BCCI officials on the sidelines of the England series, with the ace batter reportedly unhappy with the decision.
For those unaware, Sharma has already hung up his boots from T20Is and Test cricket. The former captain led India to the 2023 World Cup final, where his aggressive strokeplay up front remained a key foundation for India’s unbeaten run to the summit clash before they suffered their only defeat of the tournament to Australia.
However, he guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, followed by a triumph in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
