Rohit Sharma breaks Inzimam-ul-Haq's record during England ODI

CARDIFF: India opener Rohit Sharma on Thursday surpassed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq to become the seventh-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket.

Rohit,39, achieved the milestone during the second ODI against England at the Sophia Gardens with a boundary off Jofra Archer in the fourth over. The boundary took Sharma’s career ODI tally to 11,740 runs, one more than Inzamam, who scored 11,739 runs in the format.

Rohit, however, reached the record in considerably fewer matches, reaching the landmark with 11,757 runs from just 279 innings in 287 ODIs. The Indian opener has maintained an outstanding batting average of 48, highlighting both his consistency and match-winning ability in the 50-over format.

Sharma went on to score 26 runs in the ongoing fixture and now sits seventh on the list of all-time leading run-scorers in ODIs with 11757 runs in 287 matches with the help of 62 fifties and 33 centuries.

His compatriot Sachin Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in ODI history with 18,426 runs, followed by current teammate Virat Kohli, while Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara occupies third place.

Most runs in men’s ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 18426 runs in 452 innings

Virat Kohli (India) – 14850 runs in 301 innings

Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 14234 runs in 380 innings

Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 13704 runs in 365 innings

Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) – 13430 runs in 433 innings

Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 12650 runs in 418 innings

Rohit Sharma (India) – 11757 runs in 279 innings

Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan) – 11739 runs in 350 innings

Despite reaching another personal milestone, Sharma’s future in India’s ODI setup hangs in balance following reports that the selectors are planning to move beyond him.

The reports say that the Indian selection committee spoke to Sharma, alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, last week and outlined a plan ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The selectors are keen to give younger players more opportunities. With left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal waiting in the wings, they are planning for the 2027 50-over World Cup without Sharma.
